The design system that turns consistency into a governance decision.
The challenge:
A national energy infrastructure operator managed a fragmented digital ecosystem: multiple applications built at different times, by different teams and suppliers, without a common visual or interaction language. The result was visible: each product seemed to be made by a different company, and maintaining them was increasingly expensive.
The brief was not just to design pretty components. It was to define the visual and interaction infrastructure that any team — internal or external — could use as a foundation, and the governance model that would ensure that that foundation was respected and evolved in an orderly manner.
The approach:
We began by auditing what existed: what was there, in what state, what was de facto reused even if it was not formalized. That audit was the basis for designing a system that was based on reality, not a blank page.
We built the system in layers: design tokens (colors, typography, spacing, iconography), atomic components, reusable interaction patterns and templates for the most frequent use cases. Everything documented in Figma and connected to the code, so that designers and developers spoke the same language without depending on clarification calls.
But the most critical part of the project wasn't the system itself — it was the governance model. We define who can propose changes to the system, how they are approved, how updates are communicated to all teams that depend on it, and how exceptions are managed without the system becoming fragmented. Without that model, a design system dies in months.
The result:
A modular design system in production, adopted as the basis for all new digital developments in the organization. Internal teams can build new products with consistency without needing the EGGS team for every decision.
The cost of designing and developing new features was significantly reduced in projects that adopted the system. The accessibility audit of the covered products showed a relevant reduction in the number of incidents.
