A global bank with product teams in multiple countries needed consistency not to depend on everything being reviewed by the same team. I needed infrastructure.
The design system that allows hundreds of people to build the same bank.
The challenge:
A global bank operating in more than ten countries had dozens of product teams building digital applications in parallel. In Spain, in Mexico, in Peru, in Colombia. Each team with its own designers, its own criteria, its own components.
The result was predictable: products that seemed to belong to different banks. Inconsistencies that generated friction for the user. A maintenance cost that grew with each new functionality. And a core design team that spent more time resolving inconsistencies than building new things.
The assignment was clear: design the system that would make it possible to build coherently without everything having to go through the same team.
The approach:
These types of projects fail when it comes to design alone. The system can be flawless in Figma and be dead in six months if the organization does not have a clear model of who maintains it, who can propose changes, and how conflicts between local needs and global standards are resolved.
We work in parallel on two fronts: the system itself (components, tokens, patterns, templates) and governance (the federation process through which changes to the system are proposed, reviewed, approved and communicated to all teams that depend on it).
The system was documented in Figma and connected to the production code, so that the component seen by the designer and the one implemented by the developer are the same. Each component has its behavioral description, its variants, its error states and its accessibility rules.
The formation of internal teams was part of the project from the beginning — not an addendum at the end. A system that teams do not understand is not adopted, no matter how well built it is.
The result:
An active global design system as the infrastructure for all bank digital products, maintained by an internal team with ongoing support from EGGS. Product teams from different countries build consistently without needing central validation for every decision.
The relationship with this bank has been active for more than a decade. The design system is one of its pillars — and has evolved with each iteration of the brand and with each new generation of digital products.
